The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi, has pledged to construct a multimedia resource centre and establish a campus radio station for the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.
Adeniyi made the commitment in Lagos on Wednesday during his acceptance speech after being conferred with a fellowship award at the institute’s special convocation ceremony.
He said the proposed project would include a two-storey building housing a modern multimedia centre aimed at equipping students with practical, industry-relevant skills.
“I hereby commit to construct and deliver a two-storey building to house a multimedia resource centre for the institute. Construction will begin as soon as we obtain the required approval,” he said.
According to him, the facility will feature production studios, digital laboratories, modern classrooms, staff offices, and collaborative spaces to support teaching and learning.
Adeniyi explained that the centre would enable students to integrate text, audio, video, images and animation into their journalistic work, in line with global media standards.
He added that the initiative would bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, preparing graduates for the evolving media landscape.
The Customs boss also pledged to establish a campus-based radio station with appropriate transmission equipment to enhance student training in broadcasting and content production.
“It is now time to bring this platform home. The new centre will provide a dedicated space, including a transmitter suitable for terrestrial licensing,” he said.
He noted that the radio station would serve as a hub for developing skills in reporting, editing, programme production and media management.
Adeniyi described the initiative as part of the service’s broader corporate social responsibility efforts, reaffirming its commitment to education and youth development.
Reflecting on his time as a student, he said the institute played a key role in shaping his career and professional values.
“This institution instilled in me discipline, professionalism and a commitment to continuous self-development,” he noted.
He expressed gratitude to the institute for the honour, describing the fellowship as a “full-circle moment” in his career.
In his remarks, Chairman of the NIJ Governing Council, Olusegun Osoba, said the award recognised Adeniyi’s outstanding contributions to public service and national development.
Osoba stated that the honour followed years of careful consideration and was strictly based on merit.
He commended the Customs chief for his achievements in revenue generation, institutional reforms and support for education.
Also speaking, NIJ Provost, Gbenga Adefaye, praised Adeniyi’s leadership qualities, describing him as a model of integrity and professionalism.
The event was attended by academics, media professionals, alumni and students, celebrating excellence in journalism and education.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NIJ alumni presented a framed portrait to Adeniyi in recognition of his achievements.
